What defines a person's worth?...
Beauty? Wealth? Popularity? Is it intrinsic or earned?
I want to believe it's intrinsic — really, I do. But with how society works, I'm inclined to say it's the latter.
People who don't fit in, aren't conforming, nor contributing much to the community are seen as lesser than (See: ableism, queerphobia, racism, etc.).
Thus, this is a big reason why I fret a lot about what other people think of me.
It's a cycle that makes me miserable. It's an unsustainable way to exist, and I know that. However, this intrinsic, animal part of me still craves validation, belonging, and community...
But what if I find myself alone?
I have been in that situation before— for years, actually. I was bullied and friendless when I was a child. Why me? I don't know. I might've been an easy target.
I'm no longer in that position, but I still feel like I'm inherently worth less than the people around me. A supporting character in my own story.
I'd love to learn how to find worth in myself without relying on external validation— I just don't know where to start. Maybe I should do some research...
If you have any wisdom to impart, I'd appreciate it.
